FEMA Disaster Aid for Texas Flood Victims: How to Apply for Financial Help

The severe floods in Texas have left many families with damaged homes and lost belongings.

To support recovery, the federal government has activated FEMA disaster assistance, allowing affected residents to receive financial aid for repairs, temporary housing, and essential needs.

If you live in Harris, Galveston, Brazoria, Fort Bend, Kerr County, or other included areas, here’s what you need to know and how to apply quickly.

What Does FEMA Help Cover?

FEMA assistance can help pay for:

  • Temporary housing if you cannot stay in your home

  • Home repairs for uninsured damages

  • Replacement of essential personal property

  • Disaster-related medical, dental, or funeral expenses

  • Disaster unemployment assistance and legal services

FEMA does not replace insurance but helps cover uncovered, essential needs caused by flooding.

Step 1: Document Your Losses

Before applying:

  1. Take clear photos of damaged areas and belongings
  2. Keep receipts for emergency repairs
  3. Make a list of damaged or lost items

This documentation will help expedite your application process.

Step 2: Apply for FEMA Assistance

You can apply in three easy ways:

Have this information ready:

  • Social Security number

  • Address of damaged home

  • Description of damages

  • Contact phone number

  • Insurance details if applicable

Step 3: Prepare for Inspection

FEMA may schedule an inspection to verify your losses.

Be available or assign someone to be present during the visit. In some cases, FEMA may accept photos or a virtual inspection if in-person visits are not possible.

Step 4: Track Your Application

You can track your status online or via the FEMA app. Once approved, you will receive:

  • A notification of your assistance amount

  • Details on how and when funds will be transferred

Note: Most payments are made via direct deposit for faster access to funds.

Step 5: Explore Other Resources

In addition to FEMA’s Individual Assistance:

Who Qualifies for FEMA Assistance?

To qualify, you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident
  • Live in a declared disaster area
  • Have suffered direct damage from the floods

Hurry! Deadlines Apply

You typically have 60 days from the disaster declaration date (July 6, 2025) to apply for FEMA assistance.

Applying promptly ensures you receive the help you need without delays.
