Low-income households may be able to get a free or heavily discounted iPhone in 2025, thanks to the federal Lifeline Program.

This program helps families stay connected by offering free phones (including older iPhone models), discounted phone plans, and monthly talk, text, and data benefits.

Why SNAP Recipients Automatically Qualify

If you receive SNAP (food stamps), you are automatically eligible for Lifeline. That means:

  • No extra income documents

  • Faster approval

  • Easier access to a free device

Lifeline partners with approved providers that sometimes offer free iPhones, typically models like the iPhone 7 or iPhone SE, depending on ZIP code and inventory.

What Is Lifeline?

Lifeline is a federal program that lowers the cost of phone service for low-income individuals. In some cases, certified providers include a free smartphone as part of their plans.

Benefits often include:

  • Free or discounted smartphones

  • Free monthly talk and text

  • Free or discounted data

How to Apply for a Free iPhone Through Lifeline

The government doesn’t ship the phones itself; it works with approved service providers (such as AirTalk Wireless, Cintex Wireless, Safelink, etc.).

Here’s how the application works:

  1. Check eligibility
SNAP qualifies automatically, but you can also qualify by income or other benefit programs.

  2. Choose a participating provider
Look for a Lifeline company in your area that offers free iPhones. Availability varies by ZIP code.

  3. Complete the online application
Upload proof of SNAP participation (like your approval letter or EBT card).

  4. Receive your phone
After approval, your provider mails the iPhone directly to your home.

Other Programs That Also Qualify

You can also get a free phone through Lifeline if you participate in any of the following programs:
